URNSMITH is preparing its collection. This guide offers general questions to ask before choosing; it does not certify the capacity of any product.

Start with the volume to be held

Ask your crematory or funeral professional for the volume of the cremated remains, including any allowance needed for the container or bag you intend to use. If remains will be shared, confirm the portion each urn needs to hold.

Capacity is different from exterior size

Usable interior capacity describes how much an urn can hold. Exterior dimensions describe the space it occupies. Compare capacity in the same units, and check the opening as well as the interior before choosing.

Check the details for the individual urn

  • Confirmed usable capacity and units
  • Exterior height, width and depth
  • Opening size and closure method
  • Whether the intended bag or inner container fits

Labels such as keepsake, adult and companion are general categories, not a guarantee of a particular capacity. The sizes shown on our homepage are illustrative.
